Question:

Advanced Piano Technique Help- Qualified Instructors Only Please.

Hello I am an intermediate/advanced piano student who lacks a good teacher. My question is this- how is proper voicing (orchestration) achieved? (i.e. the technique of sounding higher notes above the lower ones in a single chord)

I have heard that it has something to do with utilizing arm weight and shifting the center of gravity, but I have no idea how to go about actually doing it.

Also, can you recommend any pieces from classical repertoire in which to practice this?

Finally, can anyone recommend any good resources for learning about the utilization of arm weight in piano technique? Even better: tell me all that you know!

Thanks so much in advance.

  1. I am a piano competition judge in NY  If you are concerned about intermediate (this is not yet advanced) technique in piano, then you KNOW your own answer - you must FIND a fine teacher.  They might not be next-door - you might have to drive a bit - or a long ways.    There are not CDs, websites, etc hat can help you -you must be SEEN and HEARD to benefit.  You knew this, didn't you?

ADDITIONAL - I am on a few Groups of professional flutists, etc.  See if there is a Yahoo Group that you can join, that will give you a grater concentration of SPECIALISTS, rather than the general population that wanders in here.  The Flutenet group that I frequent has a WEALTH of knowledge - as do other no-Yahoo groups to which I subscribe. Most of these ask you to identity yourself, use your real name - so far les anonymous sniping, etc.
