Question:

Advanced Players Hook?

I am a 6 handicap and I have a hook. I know what I am doing wrong but I don't know how to fix it. I am getting too far in front of the ball and smothering the clubface causing a low hook. My grip is fine and my address is on target, that I can fix. If anybody knows how to fix this it would be amazing.

Thnx.

  1. The quick fix is to move the ball a bit more forward in your stance and adjust your swing accordingly.  But this will cause a higher flight path (better than a low hook).

Longer term fix would probably be the down swing/weight shift or your follow-thru.  For the down swing/weight shift, try tucking your right elbow in towards your hip after you start your down swing, keep a 'head behind ball, look at ball with right eye' swing thought (this will make your upper body lag and stay behind the ball).  If you are still hooking, make sure your behind does not turn until after impact and bend your right knee a bit during the last 1/3 of the down swing to keep it on plane.

For follow-thru, I try to pick an imaginary target straight out in front of the ball and make my club head hit that target after impact.  This will extend your follow-thru forward longer instead of turning too early back to your left.

    Hope this will help...

  2. The best thing you could do is have a lesson to get your swing looked at. Then at least you know your getting the right information.

    Good luck!

  3. If you play at a nicer course you should have a reputable teaching pro.  Have him or her watch you hit a 20 balls or so.  My guess is they will be able to give you a nice mental picture of how you can turn that hook into a nice playable draw.

  4. as a 6 you are, as you said, aware of what the result is and what is actually causing your problem.......but.......there are several things thac can cause you to smother the clubface......My advice is a quick trip to your Pro.....Even Tiger has a coach to find the quirks in his swing.

  5. go to a teaching PGA pro spent a couple bucks

  6. my dad hits a huge hook and the easiest way to fix it is to open the face club just a little bit. that or u can do the hard way and swing from outside-in like i do and then u should hit a small fade or small draw and then u can work on what u want the ball to do with just practice. thats what most people will tell u to do

  7. to take the easy way out just play the hook EX. just aim away from the hole and let the hook work for you.

  8. I used to have the problem and im a scratch golfer now. I tried to think to keep my right foot down longer through impact and to try and stay a little more centered. Hope this helps
