Question:

Advanced home theater set up questions (PS3 Blu Ray - 1080P, etc.)?

I just got a 73" Mitsu WD- 73733. Which is a 1080P DLP TV.

I want to use a PS3 as my blu ray player.

I need to get the audio signal (coax dig/optical) to my 5.1 receiver.

Also, I need an analog signal(red/white) to my analog receiver. Which shouldn't be a problem if I can do it the way I explain.

I will be connecting the PS3 to my TV using an HDMI cable.

This TV has a coaxial digital out.which I don't think I can use because when it is active it disables the L/R for my analog receiver.

My plan is to connect the PS3 to TV via HDMI. Then use the PS3's optical out and connect it directly to my 5.1 receiver.

WIll this work? Does using the PS3's HDMI sound disable optical out on PS3?

Is there a better way to connect everything?

Sorry if this is confusing. It has been for me.

  1. That will work just fine - you CAN run optical sound and HDMI video at the same time.

    I've done it.

  2. Evildude and Chris are wrong on this.

Evil J is absolutely correct.  You definately CAN use dig. optical for audio and the HDMI for picture on the PS3.  I know this becuase this is how I have my PS3 connect in my system.  I also happen to have my Sky HD box AND my Xbox 360 connected in exactly the same manner.

What I don't quite understand is why you want to connect the analog up too?  On the PS3 there is a setting saying what audio type you wish to output, of course currently I have 'Optical' selected.  I do not know if this then turns off the analog output, I have never tried it since I have never needed to.

I would imagine that the digital output on your TV does not act as a pass through for your amplifier (i.e. I doubt very much that it would send audio from the HDMI connection out to an amp).  I would assume that it is simply for getting 5.1 audio (which is available on some freeview channels) out of your TV's built-in DVB tuner, and into a decoder.  I would check your instructions for clarification on this.

  3. i don't think that's going to work because you have to choose which of the out you want to use........like...HDMI only or digital out only. you cannot use both...so go here for more info....

  4. The way I would connect it is to use the Optical output from the PS3 into your receiver and use the DLP as a monitor via HDMI. As the previous guy said you can't use the HDMI and Optical at the same time for sound. I wouldn't use the analog cables as they are pretty rubbish quality in comparrison to Optical.

Enjoy the Games especially on that 73"!! ;)
