Advanced riders/doctors?

Question

I go to a lesson/stable/everything horse place and this horse I LOVE! Is sick. She has a cut on her right hind leg towards her hoof that needs a very small wrap/band-aid on it. She currently isn't riding and hasn't for a few weeks. I know your not a doctor and you can't give me an exact time but any guesses on how long it will be before I can ride my poor baby :] thanks

I would consult the vet that usually cares for the horse on any medical subject before consulting us here.

The area your thinking of is called the pastern.  Or, if it right around the top of the hoof where the skin transitions to the hoof that is called the coronet band. Boy I keep editing because there is always another "part" it could possibly be..so, if it at the rear down near the two bulbs..that would be the heel so, I'll stop here short of giving an anatomy lesson!!  One of them "should" cover the area your speaking of!!

It depends on how well the cut is being taken care of and exactly where it is located. Leg injuries are pretty tricky. Some injuries won't bother a horse, but others are quite detrimental. Usually cuts around the lower leg / hoof area aren't that bad; making them easier to ride with. But if it is a severe cut, she may not be able to be ridden for a while.

Most likely, the stable called the vet to check about her injury. That being the case, try talking to the stable owner or head trainer. They will know what is going on with the horse and would most likely be glad to tell you about her condition.

Probably 2-3 weeks is my guess if the cut isnt too deep. If its pretty deep then possibly 3-4 weeks.

Without knowing how deep the cut is or if there is other damage besides just the cut it is impossible to guess at a time frame for healing.  Sorry.

Depends of if she has a puncture wound, anything around the coronet band will be a difficult injury to treat and completely recover without the possibility of some lameness issues. If its just a superficial wound you should be fine in a few weeks maybe less. With such little description and without a picture its a best guess. Most courses of antibiotics are a week to 10 days. I hope she will be fine and you can get back to riding soon. Good Luck.
