Advantage of channel 3 or 4?

Why is it that when you set up a vcr or similar device it gives you the option to broadcast on channel 3 or channel 4? Does one have an advantage over the other? Just curious what the reasoning was for having two channel options.

No advantage.

The choice is there to provide better quality. If you have a local station on channel 3 or 4 you might get interference from that station, so you can select the other channel. Some devices offer channel 2 or 3, although much less popular. With analog TV you won't have two full power stations on adjacent channels. With DTV however that rule no longer applies.
