  1. It's more popular in countries other than the US, the so-called beloved Gap Year. A lot of people do it, the Princes  Harry, William and even Charles did it! So you can't say it's something for us mere commoners!

As you don't have any real educational background besides the required studies however a foreign language is very desirable.

Any gender -  look into outdoor work or agricultural work. They have tons of jobs all over the world like this. Or look into community building, such as preparing a school, including lessons plans and actually building a school, in a rural village some where.

Girls- Au Pair work can be rewarding and though not financially beneficial, the chance to live and experience a real family overseas with  also give you a huge step forward. Boys can also be au pairs, but honestly the chances are much more slim. Sorry.

Disadvantages is that you would be a year behind in your studies compared to your friends but they might also take a year off during school sometime later so it could even out in the end. Is it that important to you to be with your friends of your same age group? If so, don't leave.

After high school, I found that though friends come and go, you are still there and you need to focus on you and your future, not the future of your friends!

I would definitely support taking a Gap Year.

  2. There are no distinct advantages or disadvantages for a gap year.

People are all different and everyone has different priorities. Some people believe that travel broadens the mind and gives valuable experience for going into adult life and university.

one should never be prescriptive. People travel at some point in their lives and when they really feel the urge is the best time. I do think that travel to strange countries comes with certain risks. Some people don't take these risks till later.

It is a personal decision and there is no right or wrong answer or right or wrong way to approach the subject.
