Question:

Advantages of a Nikon or similar spectacles lense over regular lenses?

Is is true that spectacles lenses made by Nikon are superior to regular lenses at my optometrist's? He advised me to go for the more expensive Nikon lenses as they are lighter, sharper and will halt progressive vision deterioration.

Are there really advantages to the more expensive lenses?

  1. That depends. Are you talking about progressive lenses? (no line bifocals) If that is the case then yes, usually more expensive progressive lenses will have superior designs to maximize your viewing areas.  Basically though, with all lenses there are differences. Depending on the strength of your prescription, some manufacturers have very high index lenses that make thick lenses much thinner and lighter. Some will also incorporate a non-glare coating included with the price. The best lens is the one that suits you and your correction. Nikon is not exclusive to thin and light lenses, but your doctor may make a few extra bucks selling it to you. No lens will halt vision deterioration. Your vision will change regardless of what lens you use. High index lenses that reduce thickness and weight will always cost more, but the advantages of cosmetics and comfort are worth it. Just be sure your prescription warrants these types of lenses.
