Question:

Advertising (Art Director) more business or art?

i want to become an art director someday and i found two schools that offer the degree i need but they seem to be a little bit different. One school requires more business related courses (accounting, business law etc) and the other it's more "loose" and more on the artistic type. I know graphic designing, art directing etc is more about art but would it be better to go to the school with the more business preps?

  1. That's a tough question because I think being great at art and at business is really important for an art director. Personally, I think you'll be better prepared for the industry if you have a strong business background. You'll need to be able to communicate and be efficient and a critic and I'm sure if it is a degree to help you get into being an art director, then you'll get plenty of the art side too. It will be great because you'll learn about the legal stuff and the ins and outs that you might miss out on if you don't get those business oriented classes at the other school. I majored in illustration in college and I think the one thing my degree 'failed' to do was prepare me to be a business person. If I were to go back I would do art as my major and minor in business because I think it could have gotten me a lot farther faster.
