Advertising: How can something be "New and improved"

  1. Unfortunately,there are some unscrupulous advertisers who make  claims that are a bit of a stretch.  

    Believe it or not, though, most major advertisers adhere to a code of ethics called "truth in advertising."  If advertisers get caught in a false claim, not only would it generate bad press, it would negatively impact sales.  What sales get generated by false claims isn't worth the potential consequences.

    That being said, the words "new and improved" could reference the fact that the manufacturer has improved its formula, performance, taste...any number of things...making it a "new" product as well.

  6. someone might buy something ' new' and 'improve it' somehow. could buy new clothes and alter them to improve them and look better??? thats my only guess

  8. It means a new version of the product which is improved. Does it not follow, however, that the previous version was inferior?
