my husband has just qualified as a driving instructor and has joined a company. they do advertising for him e.g. ad in paper and leaflet drop but he wants to get his own students as well.

what r the best ways of advertising but not in a paper

I agree with the above comments saying you can get pupils through word of mouth, but this is very hard when you first start off, as noone knows you yet!!

I worked for BSM for 3 months then set up alone. I took all my pupils with me but it was still hard getting new pupils as a lot of them were older and didn't have friends / relatives who wanted to learn to drive

I started my own website (my first was using microsoft word and was very basic as I had no idea what I was doing!) and it has gone through many changes but is stilll bringing me regular enquiries. I have only been teaching since 2006 so I am waiting for younger brothers / sisters of my previous pupils to get a bit older!!

These days, the best way is build a website.

Tell your friends and network. Small internet website. Prominent signbox on the car with 'his' phone number displayed. School notice boards. Local shop notice boards. Yellow pages. Yell online. Most importantly, recommendation - if he's good, his circle of pupils will naturally increase as his pupils recommend him to others. etc etc.

The best ad is to be honest and truthful and do a damned good job.If you are successful people will flock in from personal recommendations.Ask present pupils if they know anyone learning or thinking about it, don't be shy!

Finally, just watch the point in your business when all your success leaves you with no pupils to speak of,they've mostly all passed and you wonder where your next pupil is coming from.Then the work comes in steadily and you know you've made it.Don't let the lapsed pupils get away,call them they may be getting discouraged, they'll thank you for pestering them when they hold their pass certificate in their hand.

I would say online advertising has to be one of the best ways. Creating a simple website would be a good start. Also free classified sites like Gumtree are good.
