Advertising my forum for free?

I have asked this before and I was given one helpful answer and a bunch of spam. I'm going to try this again. No spam. I'm looking to advertise my forum for people who have experienced paranormal activity in Jackson County, Mo to share their experiences. I want to ONLY advertise locally as its not for everyone in the worlds experiences but just those in Jackson County. PLEASE no answers pertaining to "general advertising" or to your "great new program to sell my products". I don't have any products. It is a board for sharing and discussing these experiences in this particular area and I'm trying to let people know about it. Thank you!

I would start by distributing flyers or posters in any local "paranormal" type shops - places where tarot cards and such are sold.

Also, you could sponsor an event series at a local library or bookstore and invite people to talk about a recent paranormal books.  Usually these type of events get promoted in community papers.  Better yet, find a local author who has written anything about paranormal activities in Missouri, and have him/her join in and do Q&A.

I would also find any academic-types in your area who study paranormal activity, as they may also be well-connected to a small community.  

Finally, if you want pay for ads, try your local alternative newspaper.  Better yet, call the editorial staffs and pitch your web site, maybe they'll do a story.

Rule of thumb- people probably won't remember your ad until they've seen it 3x, so do a long ad program.  Try classified first just to dip the toe in if your budget is small.

Oh...and as you build traffic through these events, your search engine traffic will see a small uptick.  But don't expect much since you're only focusing on your county.
