I was going to major in hospitality, but Im tired of catering to people which is all what hospitality is about. I have been in the restaurant business for a few years as a waitress and a hostess, and a little food prep. I HATE restaurants and I HATE catering to people. Also in hospitality the earnings are crappy. I thought I wanted to major in hospitality, but I have realized its not all that its cracked up to be. I also know people who have degrees in hospitality managment and they are waiters! The other thing I dont like about hospitality is that a degree is not really required. I do know what that I want a degree in business but Im not sure what I want to do in business. I do want to own my own business one day though. I like numbers and projects too. Any suggestions on what I should major in?

  1. All right.

Everything depends on how many years you have already completed and how many years more you want to stay in college.

But I would suggest doing a general business degree with a few courses in entrepreneurship and finance. Another good thing to do would be some advanced mathematical finance/quantitative finance courses. Recruiters love those.

  2. Why don't you major in a business program, possibly in marketing since that does entail numbers and projects.  (It's not really selling, that's something different).  That would build on your current experience and any hospitality courses you've already taken.  It would be good to have some internships in the area before you graduate, though.  Be sure to take marketing statistics, as that is the most valuable to employers--being able to make projections based on market research about products and services.  Maybe you could be a consultant to hospitality organizations?

It's good to know what you don't want NOW -- I commend you for rethinking this.
