Question:

Advice Needed! Which Graduate degree would be best for me?

I am graduating next Spring with a BA in English and a BS in Family & Consumer Science, with Secondary Teaching Certification.

I'm thinking now about graduate programs and wanted to get some suggestions as to what the best degree would be to complement my BA's.

I would eventually like to be a high school guidance counselor after I've gotten in some teaching experience.

Would a Master's in Social Work or in Educational Psychology work best? Are there any other possiblities that I haven't considered?

Which programs out there are considered the best? I live in Michigan, but am considering online and distance learning as well as traditional programs.

And what degree would be more beneficial to me in the long run and make me more marketable to prospective employers?

I appreciate any and all responses!

Thank you so much!

  1. How about a Masters in education  (M.ed.)?  If you're sure you want to work in schools, that might better than a social work master's.  I'm sure you can add psych electives on to it.

  2. If you followed up your BS in F&P Consumer Science, you would be able to work as an administrator at a school or office. I think that is the best route because it is not as limiting as a masters in english that would require you to teach to use it. You could probably stand to make more with a an MS, but ultimately, you should choose what you will be happy doing. I went with the MBA option, starting t rethink now that it is a little too late! --Good Luck.
