I'm 13 years old and I live in Miami and ever since hurricane Katrina hit South Florida. I have been really interested in meteorology and I want this to be my future job when I grow up. I want to work in the hurricane center in FIU and I just wanted to people to give me some advice on how to achieve this goal. Like on what classes I should take in the future and what I should study hard on. Thank you :)

  1. A degree in Meteorology (Atmospheric Science) is typically pretty math intensive, so you'll need to work hard in that area.  Physics is also important.  Basically, you'll need to do well in Science.

Meteorology is a rewarding field to be, and there will always be weather, so there will always be a demand for meteorologists.  It was always my desire since I was quite young, growing up in Oklahoma.  Good Luck!!!

  2. That's so cute!

Right now, the best thing you can do is to study hard in school! When you get into highschool, have your parents bring you to your local tv station and ask them if it would be okay for you to apprentice or if they could show you around or give you advice. You can also try calling the FIU and asking them for a tour or for pamphlets. They may even be able to give you information as to how you can get into meteorology.

This site may help, too! Good luck, and keep the dream alive!

  3. wow.. thats good dear.. i really like your reason.. some people say that meteorology is hard.. but i think if you fall in love with meteorology everything is possible my dear..

Meteorology is a tough college major. The courses are challenging, but with a little planning and dedication i believe you can get through it. you should start your planning since high school. Meteorologists need to be good at math and science, so take all the courses that you can! If your school offers calculus and physics, take these two classes because they'll help you much once you get into college.

The basis requirement for becoming a meteorologist or a climatologist is a 4-year Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences. Some teaching, research or management positions require a Masters of Science degree or a Ph.D. Just to give you an idea, some of the classes that you'll be taking in college will be calculus, physics, dynamics, synoptics, and even computer programming courses.

Meteorology is not an easy degree to get, but it one that is very worthwhile. wish you luck.. :)
