  1. Michaels has some starter kits for knitting and crocheting. They have the instruction book for a simple project and the right kind of needles or hooks. Then the package tells you what kind of yarn to get for that project.

I've crocheted before, and it was pretty easy, at least the simple stuff i did was.

I've never knitted, but I've been thinking about getting one of those kits to see if I could teach myself. Coordinating two needles looks very confusing!

  2. size 8 nitting needles. or the biggest. one of those 2. and just a regular find of yarn nothing fancy. mabe a brown would be good. thats wat i started with.

  3. Go to Wal Mart and buy the book, "Learn to Crochet". It will give you instructions and tell you what size crochet hook to use.(Stick Thingy) and also what kind of yarn to use. Start really simple so you don't get discouraged.

  4. The thing to remember is to keep it simple!  I would go for crocheting first, but that's just because it seemed easier to me.  I'm sure people who prefer to knit would say that is easier.

My first project was a very simple ripple style afghan in double crochet stitches.  That afghan started out as single crochet, but those are really small stitches & it takes forever & 3 days to make any progress.  Double crochet stitches move along faster and I think they are easier for a beginner to keep consistent than triples.

When you select a pattern, it will tell you what size hook (stick thingy) to use and how much yarn to buy in what weight & colors.  The weight is a gage for measuring the thickness of the yarn.

I would suggest that you choose something pretty easy for your first project - maybe a scarf to go with your hat?  If you do an easy thing like a scarf, you can concentrate on getting your stitches right and the finished piece is likely to come out well pretty much on its own.  there are lots of free crochet patterns on the web.  Just do a search.

Good luck.  I have crocheted for a long time and it is a nice relaxing hobby.

  5. start with crochet. it is very easy don't worry about it.

here is a youtube video that shows you how to do it. watch and learn is easier than understanding text explanations.

you can find a lot of "how to" videos on youtube, just do a search. good luck!
