I am a 2 handicap golfer. I have played using my Titleist 962'b's since 1997 and have loved them so much. They are great on a perfect shot, and half decent on a miss. I used to play 3 -4 times per week and ball striking was not an issue, but now its down to 1 if im lucky. In any event, i have not paid any attention to golf club technology very much over the years. But as time goes on, I feel like I am missing out a bit with the technology advances. I was the same way with my driver, i kept onto an older titleist driver forever, then tried out the 905 and got about 20 yards and more accurate - so i am thinking its time to find a club that i can hit more accurately and get better misses out of, not worried about distance...any suggestions of new club sets that are good for low handicap players

  1. My advice to you is to get fitted.  The best or most expensive irons won't do a hill of beans for you if they don't fit properly.  Check out www.freegolfinfo.com  they can help you understand the latest technology and locate a reputable clubbuilder.

Think about it this way...  would you buy all your clothes as one size fits all or do you want something that is fit for you?

    Good luck!

  2. JS,

Find a custom clubfitter/clubmaker. A little known fact that the name brand club manufacturers don't won't you to know about is that, ALL the clubheads that are in production today, with the exception of the wooden heads made by Louisville Golf in Louisville Ky, come from the same 2 foundries in China. Yes you heard right All the clubheads come from 2 foundries in China.

They all are basically the same. The major differences are in cosmetics. They all basically weigh the same, are shaped the same, and are fit the same way as the next club.

So do yourself a favor and find a custom clubmaker and have the new set built for your swing and your game. After all every pro on tour today plays with custom built clubs. Of course most of them are payed to play these clubs, but non the less they are custom fit.

    Hope this helps,

    J

  3. ALRIGHT sounds like my kinda question here:

Im a +0.7 index, so i can relate to you big time.  There has been enormous amounts of club advancement within the last couple of years. Since there was no price range set.... I will just give you a couple of different options for iron sets.

Mizuno MP 30, or MP 60 - These are really nice.  They are like a cut muscle back, probably comparable to a Titleist CB, only with a little more workability.  This is probably the best set in between the blades and the cavaties.

Taylormade RAC MB - traditional blades, but with a little more forgiveness than Titleist.

Titleist 695MB, 695CB, 735 combo - having a titleist set, these are all the newer models of what you have.

Cleveland CG 2's i think or CG 1's, one of those is a blade that is actually pretty nice to hit.

Nike pro blades- meh at best in my opinion.

Also, Titleist just sent me an email on their new line of irons coming out, I dont remember the number, but they should be out in mid may I think.  You might try to hit those as well. Now, if you want a little more forgiving set than these, you can try the Callaway X20 tours, the Taylormade TP set, or even the New bridgestone set, I dont remember what it is called.

These are all sets that you will see out there on the course by the better golfers.  Personally, I really like the Mizunos, but they are pretty pricey....  I own the Titleist 695MBs, and I love them, but I think the MP 60's are better.  Just some opinions.  Also depends on the shaft that you get in them.  Try the Rifle series, probably a 5.5 or 6.0 from what it sounds like.  All and all, go and hit a bunch and see what feels the best.  These are just some suggestions on what to hit, so you don't have to spend days at the store.  Hope this helps.

  4. Look at the new Titleist irons AP1 and AP2, or the Calloway X20.  These all offer good feel like you are accustomed to, but more forgiveness on off center hits.

  5. I'm a 3. I have played all the irons designed to help the game. They ALL SUCK. I love blades, and all skeptics can take a jump. I love the Srixon Pro 100's and the Bridgestone J33B (I own both). Both sets have light-weight stiff shafts. If you can hit the center of the club-face, stay away from "game-improvement" irons. I believe the pro's play them because  they are paid to help sell a product.

  6. Sounds like you are a Titleist guy.  BOO!  I'm joking.  You can look at the Titleist 755.  This is last year's model.  This year's model is the Titleist AP2.  Other options are the Mizuno MP-57, Callaway X-Forged, Tour Edge Exotics Blade, Cobra Carbon CB, and Srixon I-701.
