Advice for a 21/F (Spanish speaking) to live on her own in Guaynabo, Puerto Rico?

Hello! I just received an offer to work at Guaynabo, Puerto Rico for an american company. I am a recent college grad wondering how life down there is... I will be going by myself and I know no one down there. Any suggestions? Should I live in Guaynabo or San Juan? Anything on the city would be great!

Guaynabo is a good city in the metropolitan area of San Juan.  you can find about everything in guaynabo, and San Juan is just minutes away.

Well, I'm gonna be a bit frank with ya...it's fine that you're interested on maybe going over there and live for a while but, you do have to be careful where in certain areas in Puerto Rico where you might want to explore.  Puerto Rico is not like the United States....there're some native "predators" out there, I wouldn't recommend ya to go and live there by yourself, specially if you're a non-native...you might wanna go there and live with a few friends or someone that might be there with ya and asssit you with anything that might arise during your stay over there, also local old folks are decent people to befriend too!

Guaynabo is one of the better to best location to live in PR.

The residents are more afluent and it is not too far from old

San Juan. I love old San Juan but if you are to be working in

Guaynabo I would suggest finding a location in that town (the web have many sites for PR real estate including rentals) and

just visiting old San Juan during the week-ends.

You did not stated if you can speak spanish but as long as you stay within the larger metropolitan area ( Guaynabo is

considered part of it) almost every one under age 50 speaks

English or at least can communicate well in English.

How do I know all this?

I was born in NYC but lived in PR from age 2 to age 17 when my dad (Puerto Rican) was working for the goverment.

I spent most of my childhood in Santurce but I am familiar with

most towns of the island. To be truthful my favorite area of PR

is the west coast - the pace is slower and the people are more hospitable as well as the food is more spanish oriented

than what you find in old San Juan.

Again check the web for PR real estate sites and call them

(most if not all can speak english) . They could direct you to further sources for housing in Guaynabo or Old San Juan.

Be Aware PR is a tropical country and is not as hot as some

US cities are in the summer but the humidity is VERY high so be prepare to take 2 showers a day and dress accordingly.

Make sure that the place you get have adecuate air conditioning and/or fans to keep you confortable at home.

Don't accept anything without good air fans/conditioning

or you will pay the consequences. Cotton clothing is King in the island.

You'll feel just like back in the states in Guaynabo. Is one of the best places in PR to live. Plus many Eglish speakers and professionals prefer to live there. I think It will be a good experience for you. You can use your current cell phone and the Internet to keep in touch with folks back home. And you will meet great people and make new friends in PR.

i like Guaynabo. and San Juan is just minutes away. 10 minutes dependly of what area you start to drive. im basing on San Patricio Mall in Guaynabo, PR.

Guaynabo is a very nice city in PR.  you will soon find out that the traffic is HORRIBLE and the closer you are to your work the better.  Now, if you are making good $ and don´t mind sacrificing time sitting in traffic and you want to move closer to the water then by all means go 4 it.  From Guaynabo to SJ you are very close and at rush hour you should be going against traffic if living in Old SJ or Condado.
