I am switching my career path from the fitness industry to the automotive industry starting out in sales. I am 39 y/o, college degreed, mom of two teenage boys and a wife. I have also had great experiences/success selling *things* in the past. Any advice in general about car sales and more specifically, successful techniques used by car saleswomen??

Here's the deal. If you want to go into selling cars, start with New Car Sales. The used car market is crazy and you MUST keep your morals outside the dealership lot.

Even with new car Sales, with imports, there's very cut throat competition. Sure the money's not bad. But until you find your feet, you need to take it easy. Try a domestic label. Those are "No Hassle" dealerships. Most of them bring their Morals inside the dealership with them.

Now once you get the hang of the things, you can get into the highly competitive higher paying Imports.

Yes.  The difference with car sales, is that you don't just sale an item for a price already pre-determined.  With car sales, you are often trying to sell a car for the MAX - even to the point of s******g the client.  That is NOT honest.

Read the post / question here. There are many people who get screwed by NEW and USED car dealers.  And you may think I won't do that. But you will have no choice.  In a car dealership, the sales person don't have a final say in the deal, it is the general manager who does.  And he will push to s***w each and every client.

Read few books on buying new cars (from a buyer's point of view).  You will be very surprised at the number of TRICKS they play on the clients.

I think it will make you a less of a "good" person to live like that.  Personally having worked in NYC wall street for a long time, I've seen many good people turn slowly evil.  I had to get out even though I lost my six figure income.

    good luck...

  3. Always try your best to help customer needs while at the same time maintaining friendly service and suggesting good vehicles to customers. I believe your past experiences will give you a good advantage and you'll do good in the field.

  4. You've gotten some pretty hard answers but it's because car salespeople are in a tough job and they don't have a great reputation.

To be successful car salespeople must be extremely and even viciously competitive, to the point of breaching their own ethics in order to make a sale. They can't just wait for sales, they have to agressively go GET sales, and MAKE sales. They have to have a good read on human behaviour and emotions and understand how to manipulate that behaviour. They have to know how to force a sale today, and not let the customer delay. They have to know how to make customers feel good about a buying decision, even when it was a bad decision. It's a lot different than selling refrigerators at Sears.

    Best wishes.
