Question:

Advice for a student on moving from the USA to New Zealand?

I am a US citizen and a college student. I would like to move to New Zealand and get a job there. I'd stay for 6 months - 1 year. I know I can get a visa through BUNAC for around $480. I'm sure it would be extremely difficult to find employment before arrival, but once I'm there, there's no guarantee that I would find a job. So . . . is there a best city to start in for job hunting? A particular industry that would be most likely to hire a student with a temporary work visa? Best way to find a cheap rental? Any information would be appreciated. Thank you!

  2. New Zealand has a very low unemployment rate at the moment, so if you are a skilled worker, or quite clever you can get a job no problem.  Or if not, there is always a lot of seasonal work available (fruit picking).  It depends on the salary you are looking for.  Like student work everywhere, your options are limited, and you are probably not paid what your worth.  But if you are a good student, you may be able to get university teaching work, it depends if you are a postgrad student or not.

I would decide on what university you want to study at first, as that is most important, and then see if you can get work.  Auckland is the biggest city with lots of jobs, but it is more distant from seasonal work.  In Auckland, studio apartments are cheap because there is an excess of supply, but you need to know your costs first, or at least have some money saved up, so you don't start getting into debt.
