Advice for being prepared for AmeriCorps?

My 20 year-old son is interested in joining AmeriCorps. What is the best advice you can give him for being prepared for the experience? What are the main things he needs to know as he's considering his decision to join AmeriCorps? Thank you.

be open minded.  expect the unexpected.  dont ask why this way and not my way.  do as told.  learn to appreciate the intricacies of governance and administration.  bureaucracy can be stupid but lets abide as far as possible.  in the end, he will gain tremendous experience and knowledge and insight into what life is like on the other side, another side fr home, friends, familiarity
