Me and my boyfriend are planing on moving to Kalgoorlie (to chase the money train lol) either in September this year or at the start of next year, is this a good time to go over and try our luck at getting jobs in the mine?.

Does anyone have any advice for me on how much money will be a good amount to take over there?

How to go about getting a mine job?

cheap places to stay?

if there is any place to get a cheap run around car?

and what to expect really :)

  1. You would possibly have more chance with stopping in Perth first. Pick up the car from there and drive. Approach all the mining companies in perth as Western Australia is huge and there are mining jobs all over the West. But also many people have flocked to WA with the mining boom . There are Back packers accomodation in many area s but perhaps you could pick up a cheap tent to start with. although the nights are getting cool . You can look at carsguide.com.au/wa    also  http://perthexchange.com.au/classifieds/...   Also Drive.com.au

  2. one user said as a girl you will not get a mining job, that's c**p.Lots of girls work in the mines there including my daughter in law.

She and my son moved there a year ago and are both making a good living (just bought their second house)

there is lots of work there you will just have to go from  mine to mine and see.

of course my son already had his excavator license and stuff like that before he went

  3. I suggest you check the Australian Embassy for full details. It is probable you will need a work visa, and will probably need at least $A10,000 available to you to keep you until you find a job.

I hope you are used to hot weather, it is usually in the 40s during the summmer, and even winter can get into the high 30s and below freezing at night.

It would pay you to try and get a job before you leave NZ, you can try the mining company websites operating in the area. That may help you getting a work visa as well.

Cars should be no problem, there will be plenty under $5,000 but not in very good condition.

  4. You have no idea,do you? You will hate it. It is going to be the stark contrasts. If ever you could look at the New Zealand scene and then imagine what h**l would be like, you will find that Kalgoorlie fits. Don't get me wrong, I do like Kalgoorlie.

I guess you are a girl. You will not get a mining job. Your boyfriend might.

I would suggest that he fly to Sydney, catch the train across, it's a three day's trip, try and get a job and then you join him

later. If you are with somebody that cares for you, you can put up with a lot more than you otherwise might not be prepared for.

It is an adventure, but it willbackfire unless you have enough to fall back on. (i.e. money, a lot of money.)

Avoid new found friends in case they bleed you dry. They will.

    All the best.

  5. Be prepared for something Very Different to home.

Consider stopping in Perth for a while and contacting recruiting companies, reading the local newspaper, getting onto websites like seek.com.au

Don't assume that all mining happens in Kalgoorlie and you have to live there.  MANY mine sites are only accessible by flying in and flying out, so you can live in Perth.

Immigration dept has rules about what you must bring, what you must be qualified to do and so on.  Investigate early before you start buying plane tickets!

And totally ignore the person who said "girls don't get jobs at mine sites" - but don't expect to wear a lot of white clothing or nice shoes either!
