Advice for the double leg takedown?

never very successful with this move. I know how to do it, but maybe you guys know fine key details and points that can improve my takedowns

  1. 1. set it up: beat the head or do some other thing to get the guy off balance

    2. be quick and accurate and level change

    3. keep driving the shot and land on top. dont just fall down with it

    4. practice

    if the double leg takedown isn't working try to switch to some other kind of takedown (single leg, prescott, high crotch, etc.)


  2. hmm, i'm confused on the labeling of this move. if you're using both of YOUR legs, I'm not sure. If you're taking someone else down by taking down their legs then go for the KNEES. Hunker down, run towards the person from the side and grab their knees together.

The key to any takedown is your penetration step ("your shot").  You will always need a set up.  Set ups are often times in wrestling referred to as hand fighting.  The objective there is to move your opponent out of position.  Translated to mma, the set ups involve striking.  When taking your penetration step, make sure your lead leg's knee "penetrates" past your opponents feet.  Your shoulders should hit his hips, driving him backwards.  Your trail leg, which if you are stepping forward with your right leg, will be your left leg.  Your trail leg is where you get all your power from.  Once the trail leg is on the outside of your opponents body, push off that leg to get back to your feet and drive the person to your right, having your hands at his knees.  The objective is to get off that penetrating knee as fast as possible.  That is where most people find difficulty.  Also, your head will be on the outside of your opponent, your ear in his hip (thats how most wrestlers get cauliflower ear, from drilling takedowns every practice, smashing their ears into their opponenets hips).  Make sure when you are shooting in, your back is straight and your butt is down (back should never be parallel to the ground).  When driving off your trail leg, use your head to drive your opponent as well.  I hope this helped.  It is hard to explain this without physically showing a person, but work on your penetration step on your own at home wheneve you have time.
