Question:

Advice from Firefighters?

Okay, I'm a 21 year old female and I was thinking about becoming a firefighter in Orlando, fl. Can anybody tell me what a normal shift consists of? Any GIRLS with advice? What kinds of options are there for me if I one day decide to have kids and can't do all the physical things? What about Holiday's? How many would I have to leave my friends and family for? Was the schooling hard? Does everybody have to drive the truck? Any information would be greatly appreciated. I'm really good at being calm in stressful situations and I like to help people. My biggest concerns are long term career thinking? Having to give up my time with family during holidays? The long working hours? Making enough money? Again, I'll appreciate any help. Thank you!

  1. You are worried about all the right things.  The problem for women is that the firefighters haven't reached "the tipping point" where a woman can be completely relaxed. Too many "good old boy moments" but it's getting better daily.  You won't drive the truck. Kiss your holidays goodbye.  You will be the "new guy" and work the worst shifts.  You can work 8 hour days or agree to do 24 or 48 hour shifts where you bunk at the station.  Don't hesitate. Do it.
