  1. Different herbs have different requirements for soil and water, and different habits.

Mint needs rich and wet soil. You should grow it separate from the rest as it is invasive and will strangle the other plants.

Basil is a tender annual. The plants are fairly short-lived. It grows best in good, moist soil in hot weather

Sage and rosemary are small bushes. They need well drained soil and no fertilizer. They hate getting too wet. Rosemary will usually not survive temperatures below 25 degrees.

Coriander is a short lived annual and goes quickly to seed if it is too hot and dry. It grows best in damp soil when the weather is warm but not hot.

  2. The most important thing you need is high-quality potting soil that drains well.  The soil should be kept moist, but not soggy.

Rosemary especially does not like to be in wet soil.  Overwatering will kill rosemary very quickly.
