Question:

Advice on Driveway pour?

Hi, Im planning to pour a driveway that extends to the garage. I plan on using fibermesh mix @ 4" thick. The new driveway will be 9' X 22'. I know I need and expansion joint where the new concrete will meet the garage concrete, as well as the existing driveway... but Im not sure if I should have an expansion joint(s), or just trowel in a control joint when the concrete is wet at the mid length section (11ft) 1" deep???

  1. I would cut two control joints, Leave approx 7' between each.  Depending on the surface you are pouring over..4" really isn't that deep.

  2. I prefer the look of a tooled control joint vx. expansion joint material.

Remember to check your grade, you don't want water on the new slab running toward the garage. Also leave the new slab down 1/2" or so from the existing garage slab. This provides a little water dam to keep wind driven rains from blowing under your garage door and into the garage.

Don't over float/trowel the new concrete. That is a big mistake DYIers often make.

    Good Luck

  3. Your best bet is to use a groover and run it across at the 11' point.  That should be sufficient.  Good luck.

  4. Cutting a control joint as described is exactly what you need, you only need the expansion joint where there could be movement, i.e. existing structure and new concrete.
