My brother and sister in law are in the process of becoming foster parents, I really admire them for this but does anyone have any advice I can give them before they start

  1. What a great thing they are doing.  My parents are foster parents and they love it.  Kids need to feel like they belong to the family.  Everything has to be the same. No special treatment.

Mom says that the best part is having a large family and the worst part is that even though case workers say things like

"the child will never go home". Until you have adoption papers in your hand don't believe them.

She fostered 2 little girls for 6 years and they took them out of our home on christmas eve with about 12 hours notice.   If they are new to having kids, you can be there to support them.  they will need a night off every now and then.

  2. They've probably read up on everything there is to nkow about fostering, but patience is key.  Depends too on the ages theyw ill be fostering.  It's a tough emotional road to travel, but well worth it

  3. Oh lord.. where to start!!

Be prepared to feel out ur depth (initially)  Lose ALL materialistic feelings & be relaxed, open & keep your sense of humour.   Remember u are a couple first & keep working on that.. find times together & remind yourselves that fostering....IS A JOB!!!!!!!!!

    Anything else... email me!

  4. Don't push the kid to call them mom and dad
