Advice on a Working/Holiday Visas in Australia. (A lot of questions in here!)?

I'd like to apply for a working/holiday visa to travel and work in Sydney, Australia. Im currently in the UK and I know i need a subclass 417 application , but I cant seem to find the actual forms to download or to order! Please help!

And I'd like to know how 'easy' it is to obtain this Visa, and will I need to apply closer to the time I need it ( a year or so away).

I will be travelling alone, im 19 but will probably be 20 by the time I go and im female, are there any specific safetly issues I should prepare for ?

Im hoping to secure some light work just to tide over my living expenses during the trip, i'll be staying in a youth hostel so I will need a job for my food/publictransport costs, does anyone know how easy it is to get work whilst there?

And are online australian job sites that would help me secure work before I go reliable ? ( Are they likely to turn me down when I arrive/ deny knowledge of me !)

Thanks so much to all and anyone that answers !

  1. I did this a few years back..

You will need to print the form from the immi.gov.au website..

Once issued, you can enter the country upto a year from the date of issue, so no point waiting until just before you go- Also, it may take a couple of months for your application to be processed..

You don't really want to be waiting for your passport and visa to be sent to you with your departure date approaching..

You will find work easy to come by, although you can only work for 1 employer for 12 weeks..

Sydney is quite expensive.. take as much money as you can with you as it will be harder to save up over there..

Don't just stay in Sydney- it's a big country to explore!

    Enjoy

edit- looks like an online application now..

  3. Safety issues: don't hitch-hike, at least by yourself. Don't leave your drinks unattended just in case. It's really all pretty safe.

I think a working holiday visa is easy to get if you speak English and are young, like you.

Jobs are easy to get. There are job websites like www.careerone.com.au or www.seek.com.au, but for a working holiday you are better to just find jobs when you get here. Most people work in hospitality (in the cities) or fruit picking (outside the cities). The youth hostel will be able to guide you with this.

  4. Hay i got my visa last week, i applied for it on tuesday night and i got it wednesday morning. I got it on this site www.immi.gov.au. When you apply for it you will get a visa grant number, so you can check your application straight away. Then all you have to do is print the visa of the inter net and that's it. It cost me $180 which is about £83, So it was very easy for me to get it.  So i hope you get your visa and get to go and have a great time . Good luck

  5. Some good job websites that are reputable:

    www.mycareer.com.au

    www.careerone.com.au

    www.jobsjobsjobs.com.au

    www.seek.com.au

They are all for real, no scams or trick on these websites they are owned and operated by the big newspaper companies in Australia.

  6. Most people have covered everything. Australia is relatively safe but like all countries we do have crime. Just be vigilant and be as aware as you would anywhere.

Jobs are relatively easy to get and the websites already listed by others are a great way to get started. Many Hostels also offer helpful aids in finding a job. If you are looking for hospitality work, different sates have different laws and depending on where you are living or travelling through you may be required to obtain a Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate. A good deal of pubs will have courses as do our TAFE Colleges, (Technical and Further Education). Again Hostels should have a good deal of information on those sorts of things.
