Question:

Advice on a performance road bike?

Trying to decide between a K2 mod 4.0 (2006 model) v. Giant OCR-1 v. Cannondale CAAD9 5.

Anybody know anything about K2 frames. I haven't heard of K2 making bikes before and Cannondale has a great rep for quality.

Geometry. The K2 and the Giant have a more laid back geometry and that may be easier on my back (sales says you get used to the more aggressive posture of the Cannondale, but what do you expect). Not sure it matters.

Parts. Cannondale and K2 have ultegra derailleur in the back but otherwise all have 105 system parts. K2 has Carbon forks and chain stays while Cannondale has carbon forks but not chainstay and Giant has carbon on neither.

Price. Both the Giant and the Cannondale are $1100 while the K2 is only $800.

Any thoughts on these various factors, whether K2 is really a good bargain? Muuuuuch appreciated

  1. Before you buy a road bike.  I would like to tell you my experience and, what I have done.

    In 2003, I bought a 24-Speed Specialized Allez.  It cost me $730.

I still have that bike.  I use it even more now, than I used to.  I don't drive and, I despise public transportation, except when the weather makes it bad to ride my bike

Sure I have had to have things replaced:

    1, Chain

    2. Brakes

    3. Brake Pads

    4. Brake Calliper

    5. Grip Tape

    6. Lights

    7. Tires

    8. Inner Tube

I expect I will eventually need to get the chainrings replaced for both, the front and back.

BUT, I am not going to shell out $1k-$3k+, for a new road bike.

I have had the same bike for 5yrs. and, will keep using it, until the parts for it are no longer available.

The picture at the address below, is of the 2008 model.  It looks basically like mine.

  2. I've had great results on my old Cannondale tri-bike.  Haven't had experience with K2 or Giant.

My input: test ride.  Fit and feel on a good bike are as important as they are in running shoes.

I tried out a bunch of different bikes, but when I got on the Cannondale, the first thing I thought was "I can make this bike go REALLY fast".  I didn't get that feeling from the others.
