A friend and wife will be in Austin this friday and would like to know if there is a bar or club that would be nice to go to that has oldies music. Something for a couple that just hit their fourties. Anything on or around sixth street. Help, my husband and I are total homebodies so we have no idea what to tell them.

Thanks.

  1. good day,

I am also in my 40 and love 6the street..wear comfortable shoes and explore...go into the shops and plan on checking out the restaurants  and bars for any kind of music you can image. Most  don't  have cover charges and you can listen before you decide to buy a drink...interesting and fun...Whats going on at Zunker park...do they still have summer concerts? go  online and type in  Austin Texas night life and you can take a tour of 6th street...have fun

  2. Pete's dueling piano bar might be just their speed.

I love to go to the Flying Pig and hang out on the roof top bar.  There's a great view of the tower from there.

Of course the 4th street warehouse district is suited for us post-college types.

  3. You can't go wrong any where. Park, start walking. You'll be able to find anything :)

Eddie V's on 5th is a little up-scale. Good place for a special night out :)

  4. I would recommend going to 4th Street which is the Warehouse District. There is a place called Cedar Street Courtyard. It has two inside bars and an outside courtyard with a stage. They have awesome martinis. My favorite is the watermelon-tini made with fresh watermelon. Anyway, its a 30+ crowd, although I am 24 and love it. They have bands everynight. They always play oldies and its always good music and entertaining as well. There is usually a cover charge to get in, anywhere from $5 to $25 I would say. Its kinda dimly lit and you can dance outside on the dance floor or just sit around and enjoy your surroundings.

  5. Sixth Street is largely a college-age top-40s hip hop frat party these days.  There's some exceptions, but I can't think of any places that play oldies, except maybe pete's dueling piano bar.  Red River has more live music venues, but it's mostly alternative stuff, not really oldies.

The Warehouse district (4th street or so) has an older crowd and is more "classy" and people are usually more dressed up.

If they want to go some place pretty laid back and "Austin-y", the best places near downtown are probably the Continental Club, or Donn's Depot.
