  1. Windows Firewall

    Windows Defender

Both will do what you need. Easy enough, eh?

  2. In the world of security, you get what you pay for!

Larger companies are able to be more proactive in developing signatures for the latest threats. Every day, new viruses are created or morphed from old ones that a whole new definition has to be written for.

If you pay for your AV, your getting a PAID staff to stay on top of things. Free AVs have to go about other ways and enticements to get their money to survive.

Since much of the large business world is protected by Symantec Corporate, this give a HUGE advantage to Norton. Another really good one is Mcafee.

I personally like NOD, Trend Micro and Kaspersky AVs.

If your going to manage AV on 1000s of computers, nothing can compete with Symantec Corporate.

    Things you want -

    1) Real time protection (yes it slows your machine down, but YOU have to have it)

    2) Signitures updated every 24 hours (and makes sure that it does so)

    3) Full system scans each night

    4) Some type of Host Based Intrusion Detection Systems

All in All, no AV is better than another. Once a virus is found, they race to update their definitions first. Symantec/Norton will not be first all of the time... However, it DEFINITELY wont be AVG!

    Some good reviews -

THE most important things you can do (besides running AV) is to ensure that the OS is fully patched, all of your software has the most current version, and that you do your everyday things with an account that does not have Admin Privileges!

If I was going to pay money (much better), I would go with Norton, McAfee, Trend Micros, or Kapersky.

The best FREE Security Software programs according to Consumer Reports are -

Antivirus Alwil Avast Home Edition or AVG

Antispyware/antiadware Install both Microsoft Windows Defender and SpyBot Search and Destroy

Antispam SPAMfighter standard or Microsoft's Outlook or Windows Mail with Junk Mail Filter.

Browser security toolbar McAfee Site Advisor.

Software firewall ZoneAlarm 7.0 (Windows XP, 2000) and 7.1 (Vista).

Rootkit detection AVG Anti-Rootkit. Not tested, but worth trying because other free programs don't claim to protect against this insidious type of malware.

Behavior Based Detection - www.ThreatFire.com - It works GREAT with Symantec Corporate 10.2!  I have been using the product for 2 months now and have been impressed so far!  It is also FREE for home use!

  3. I think Spyware terminator and for viruse  Quik heal (paid one) is best software

  4. I use AVG Free which gives very good antivirus & spyware protection for free.

I've always used Windows' own firewall, never had a problem, and I supply & maintain networks & computers for private customers & companies. I've never seen the need for an additional firewall.

  5. avira is whats on my comp and its good

  6. I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I have just upgraded to AVG free 8.0 and all seems good so far. Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from http://www.download.com/ I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps
