I am an experienced Cat Owner and have had my Cat for 9 years. She is extremely spoiled and loved. She owns us!!!

But, we are getting a new kitten (8 weeks old) this evening. Does anyone have advice for making the transition for my older cat smooth?

We plan to spoil both my older cat and the new kitten rotten, but does anyone know of surefire methods for introducing the two?

Thanks!!!

  1. When ever I have brought a new kitten in my place the older cats have hissed and howled at it for a period of time but this behavior usually goes away in a week or so. It seems to be a way of saying this is my place and I rule here any questions? Once the older cat has established who the boss is everything goes smoothly. Once in a great while you'll get a cat that will get along right away but this is a rare occurrence.  I recently was given a feral kitten that was in harms way by two boys. I took it in and my one male cat loved her right away. He makes sure she eats before he does and even brought his favorite toy to her to play with. I seldom see things like this going on between older cats being introduced for the first time to a new cat or kitten. But then Ray is a very special liitle boy.

  2. Let them sniff each other at first. Put the kitten down next to the cat and monitor them for a few moments. Your older cat WILL hiss and growl, but she will get used to the new one in a few weeks, and more than likely play "momma cat" with her. Just let them go as normal, they will get used to each other.

Also, don't force affection between them, as that will make the transition take longer. Just one introduction is all it will take.

EDIT: Hun, you won't need to keep them in separate rooms, they won't get used to each other that way. That person that said that doesn't know what she's talking about. Let them roam around the condo like they normally would.

  3. Hmm..well I do have a couple of techniques

1.(This requires 2 people)Try to get rid of all the scent of the older cat in your condo.

Then,on a couch (or on some unfamiliar territory)you have one cat,the other person has the other(so the can run to you if they need to)  have a blanket or towel over both. When you are ready, lift the blanket.Let the games begin! Some normal things to see are :

    Swatting at each other

    Bathing each other

    Pouncing

    Signs of a possible attack

    Hissing

    Signs of a fight

    Biting

    Scratching

    Ok heres another one

This is for pets that are hard to get together

Ok Give them a bath! (With the same shampoo) They will be so freaked out, that they will forget they're differences, and probly become friends.

  4. You should probably leave the cats in different rooms and just let them see each other for five minutes every two days. If you cant leave them in different rooms then just don't let them see each other for 2 or 3 days. Then after you do that your cat and kitten might get curious and will want to see each other. If that happen make them look at each other for a few minutes every day.

  5. Ok, I did this too! I had 2 cats for a loonng time. When we got a new kitten, they would hiss, or be cautionious around each other. But they got used to each other. BUT, you have to keep them in separate rooms for a while..like 3 months maybe? And introduce them carfully everyday.

  6. Make the kitten smell like the established cat, so roll the kitten around in the cat box or rub the kitten with a blanket from where the cat sleeps

  7. try letting the kitten roll around and play in your room for a while leaving their sent and then let the cat go in their and get you-st to the sent

    good luck !!!
