Hi,

Just looking for a two pieces of advice.

Firstly, my girlfriend and I are planning to head to Australia this summer for a year or two. My 1st query is how easy/hard is it to get general labour jobs in Perth/Melbourne?

Secondly, I am a qualified secondary school teacher here in Ireland (i'm not really keen on teaching over there i'd rather have an outdoor job) i'm qualified to teach Engineering, Metalwork, Technical Graphics, Solidworks, CAD and Maths. Would there be teaching jobs in these areas down under?

Who do I apply to?

Any response would be greatly appreciated,

Cheers Folks!!

Gavin.

  1. Perth is undergoing such a boom - go there....

And seriously - if you are usually working indoors in Ireland - and you work outdoors in Australia - get some really good sun block on you and learn all about slip slop slap...

About 25years ago my  neighbour newly from Scotland (not Ireland but similar weather yes?) spent just one day in the sun and didn't realise how strong it was... he ended up with the worst blisters I have ever seen - and it is not an uncommon story I have heard many many times... it only takes one really serious burn like that to cause life long damage to skin...

I can tell by your qualifications that you are very intellegent - so forwarned is forarmed...

  2. wiyh those qualifications ,you could go anywhere.

  3. Yer Sydney an perth you would easily find labouring work and liek you said your a qualified in the engeneering fields then sponsorship would also be easy to get as australia are crying out for skilled workers in those fields. Plus you'll feel at home in perth as there are loads of irish there, its a great laff and the weather is alot better than ireland lol

    enjoy

  4. Perth would be the best choice. They are enjoying an economic boom at the moment due to the demand for metals from China. I have heard that labourers can easily get $30 an hour. If you dont want to move to Perth i would suggest Brisbane or the Gold Coast as it has the best attractions and weather and they are suffering a teacher shortage, as well as the mining boom.

  5. There's apparently heaps of jobs in Perth. They are always advertising this, I don't know how true it is though. The weather is better in Perth than Melbourne so working outside there would be more pleasant. If it's your summer it will be our winter and Melbourne is quite cold in winter. You don't want to be a teacher in Victoria(Melbourne), they are the lowest paid in the country!!!! That's probably why we need more of them! Hope I haven't confused you...Australia is really a great place to live.

  6. There are heaps of jobs available in both labouring and teaching (particularly maths), more so in Perth. You'll have no trouble at all.

  7. you sound perfect right now - come!!!

we need heaps of teachers and -outdoor- jobs peoples Melbourne is the perfect place.

you'll get a job in to time!

you need to apply to the teaching institute of victoria if you come to melbourne and here is their site.

    hope that helps!

  8. Don't move to australia..come to New Zealand!

  9. You should find it quite easy to get a job as a laborer in any state in Australia. If you are wanting to get a job on any building site in Australia, you must have a health and safety card.each state has their own health and safety,so each time you want to work in another state, you will have to get that states health and safety card.To get a health and safety card you have to do a one day course through Tafe. You may also have to travel a bit if you want your health and safety card straight away as courses are held  in different places at different times. It will cost you around $200 for your course and card, and you might need more money to travel to where the course is being held. The day course isn't that hard, all you have to do is sit and listen.

One of my husbands cousins is here in Australia at the moment on a working visa and he's working as an emergency teacher down in Melbourne.I don't know how he went about getting his job,but I am more than happy to ask him,if you would like me to.I hope I was of some help.Feel free to email me if you need any more help.Take care.
