Question:

Advice on self harming please?

When I self harm I've starting liking it. I do it for no reason sometimes, although most of the time it is still when I'm upset, I have just recently done it for no other reason than I felt like it.

I've also started worrying that I aren't cutting deep enough, like other people scars are better as such.

I realise neither of these are healthy attitudes and I do want to stop, someday but really for today, I'm after some advice. Are these attitudes 'normal' within other self harmers?

  1. Hi Ando,

Is the pleasure and benefits of self-harming really that great? Are they so wonderful that it is worth cutting yourself?

If so....go for it! If not stop!

  2. See SELF HARM: ANECDOTAL, and the rest of section 16, at http://www.ezy-build.net.nz/~shaneris Print, and store somewhere, in case it isn't around, when you want to quit.

  3. I feel almost exactly the same way you do, if that helps.

I don't know how normal that attitude is for self harmers, but I don't think it's a healthy one.

I would suggest getting some professional help for your problems, or at least talking to a friend or family member about them.

Having a chance to vent and get some of the problems out in the open helps in my opinion.

  4. i feel the same, but don't think it's normal either...

  5. Not doing it is an option.

Really sharp blades will still cut you and are much better for you than blunt ones (infection.). Cutting yourself is a release-going deeper isn't a solution. More, smaller cuts that can't be noticed will make you feel better until you get HELP. Normality doesn't matter if you are cutting yourself.

You know what you have to do. And sometimes a doctor is better than a shrink.

  6. People self harm themselves cause they're very depressed.  You might want to speak to someone professional or someone who has felt this way in the past so they can advise you.

  7. go to your GP

the urge to self harm is most often caused by depression but can be caused by other mental problems

i never compared my injuries to others but i do self harm for no reason.

it is good that you recognise that these are not healthy attitudes but you need to get some help. your GP is normally the best place to start but if you are not happy with that try the NHS free helpline or walk in clinics.

if you family dont know it is often best to tell them and definatley tell any true friends. talking often helps.

  8. oh dude. it's a slippery slope. you compare your scars to other peoples? weird...what an odd thing to get competitive about.

if you're worried other people's scars are deeper and that you aren't cutting deep enough and you're asking for advice on an answers page i would say you are a teensy little bit of an attention seeker (no offence meant, i'm just saying).

i don't know if that is "normal" behaviour within self harmer groups.it's kinda sick to compare scars. very emo (again no offence, just saying)...anyway i have no advice except don't do it.

  9. I watched a movie on this on lifetime. According to the movie the teenager was avoiding her problems. She didn't know how to express her anger so she would cut. She went through consoling and medication. Maybe that would be the move for you.

  10. consider you need help asap. Having seen others in your position, in a hospital environment who had been doing it some time. They had and you have some major problems and should not be trying to inflict more pain on yourself. Where are your family in all of this, do they even know?

  11. Self harming is because u want to beat the other pain.Your used to being hurt by others emotionally and or physically.I would do mine so nobody  would see them.  They were hidden.  I don't do these things because everything is alright emotionally and physically.  You need to fix what is wrong emotionally.  Talking about your issue openly will help u with the healing process. Good luck.
