Question:

Advice on treatment of brain stem glioma grade 2/3?

Hi I am asking for advice on all patients especially children who have had a brain stem glioma fully encased within the brain stem.

Currently due to have radiation I am exploring the possibility of my son (diagnosed with a brain stem tumour May 2008 he is five years old) of instead having the tumour resected under Dr Teo.

His prognosis is that he will die in a year or two with no treatment and possibly even after radiation. Surgery is only being offered by Dr Teo. there is an 80% chance of success. Really only numbers I think.

Can any one out there share their experiences of a similar tumour type and situation and their outcomes? Unsure of what to do for his best outcome and quality of life.

Thanks,

Sandra

  1. Dr Charlie Teo?

You have a no win situation as far as being able to make an easy decision.

Supposing Dr Teo is able to remove 95% of the tumor. Would your son be able to have radiation on any remaining tumor after healing from the surgery?

I do not have any suggestions. You have met Dr Teo. If you feel comfortable with Dr Teo's care I might think long and hard about your son having the surgery.

Whatever you decide - all the best to you and your family.
