Question:

Advice on working around children, how can I help?

I work on a new job around young kids ranging in ages five to eleven. Many come from various home life where they are not given love, or taught manners which creates caos for the rest of them.

How can I help to maintain a sense of controlled behavior in them and not make them feel like I am being mean or bossy to them?

A note too~ some are in what would be considered special Ed but are in no means incapable of following rules and directions.

If there are any teachers out there, I would greatly appreciate your advice.

Thanks in advance.

  1. Without knowing what kind of situation you are in, I can't make too many specific answers. One thing I would stress is structure. Make an air-tight schedule. They know with absolute certainty what will happen next. Breakfast, coloring, play time outside, lunch, reading time, naps, singing, snacks, etc.  This gives them a sense of security. Do this gently, but firmly. This is not being bossy, this is helping them. Children do better with structure, they don't like not knowing what will happen next. It frightens them.

And teach the older ones to help the younger ones. This gives them a sense of responsibility and helps their self-esteem. Pair them with a child they need to help. Or, if the older one has problems, pair them with someone younger, but near their age who is kind and already responsible. This usually makes a good pair and they become good friends. This also teaches compassion.

Give everyone a "buddy". When you all have to leave the room, have the buddies hold hands. This will help with discipline, and again, gives each one of them someone to care for. This will help with the love and compassion issues. Going "two -by -two" is a good idea for little ones.

This comes from my mom having a day-care in our home growing up, and having five children of my own. I've homeschooled for 12 years, and have helped many other people with their children. I truly hope this helps your situation.
