Question:

Advice please about home dyeing?

My favourite bed linen is now very faded with washing and age, is it possible to successfully home dye polyester type (def. not cotton) material. The original colour was Ecru and I would like to achieve a similar colour.

What type of dye should I use and how? Any advice will be appreciated

  1. Rit is the only dye out there. My experience with dying polyester is "not to". It just doesn't last and keeps washing out faster than the original dye. Perhaps you should try going the other way and bleach them lighter.

  2. Rit makes a nice dye; follow the directions on the box/bottle.

You could try tea staining your bed linens.  Make some tea, let it cool,

remove the tea leaves/bags, then soak the items in the kitchen sink--clean it well first, so there is no soap residue or grease--for about 30 minutes, then pull them out.  You could also add the tea to the wash water in your washer, just don't add anything else.  You would need to

do all at the smae time to get the same color, or be very careful when measuring.  Coffee works, too.  Tea is more on the yellow side of

ecru, and coffee is a little more gray.

    Good Luck!
