Question:

Advice please: my kitten won't stop l*****g her incision!?

My kitten has come home from the vet's today, she was spayed. My vet told me she must not l**k the incision, but she won't stop! I have bought an e-collar, and that just isn't working. It is with the l*****g part, but she can't eat or sleep or hardly walk with that thing. I can't stand seeing her like that, so i took it off.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you

  1. Do what the vet told you, for one, and put the collar back on.  If your child had to be in a cast for awhile, would you take it off because you couldn't stand seeing them like that?  Get real?  What is your purpose here?  To have your baby heal, or let your emotions get in the way?  There's a reason they're a vet and you're not.  Your baby will soon forget about the collar.  But you are doing your beloved animal a great disservice by letting your human emotions interfere.  I had a beloved Siamese that had to wear one and believe me, felt the same as you.  She healed much quicker with the collar on.

  2. Yes, I wrap a towel, hand towel (make sure it is clean) for smaller animals around then and pinned it.

  3. Go to a pet store and buy some 'Bitter Yuck'.  It is a water based solution that will keep them from l*****g a wound.  Don't get an alcohol based solution cause that would sting on a wound.  And as hard as it is to see an animal in a ecollar - they can eat and sleep with it on.  She could be having problems walking because of the anestheticic from the surgery.

  4. i'd recommend something like bitter apple or lemon juice, something that she doesn't like the taste of and can be wiped on her skin. apply some carefully AROUND the incision (not ON it or it will sting). when she gets a nasty taste, she will probably think twice about going there again. we use things like this at our clinic/shelter & it usually works pretty good.
