  1. You should report it when it happens.  That is the only way to get a true police report-where the officer determines fault.

If you do it after youve left the scene there is no official story for what happened, only the half-truths and obvious lies coming from each party.

As far as time limits, that will vary by department.  Most insurance companies will insist on a police report, but will accept the crash reports you fill out yourself-its up to them whether or not to believe it though.

  2. It will depend on the state. I know that in many areas, even if the police are on the scene, they wil not write a report unless there is personal injury (transport by ambulance), one or more vehicles is not operable, or there is an arrest made (DUI).

The owners exchange information and the insurance companies handle it.

Check with the local authorities to see the policy in your area!

  3. It should be reported asap for your protection, if you wait any longer things can always change for both parties and sometimes for the worse.

  4. It is best to report it when it happens in order to protect yourself from the possibility of hit and run charges.

  5. I think so-if your filing with the insurance company.
