What are the best routes to get from Texas to Puerto Vallarta?

Any "must-stops" along the way?

Don't drive at night--too dangerous.

Do stop and check out Guadalajara, Tlaquepaque and Tonala.  They're all together in the Guadalajara area.

About thirty minutes south of Guadalajara are the towns of Chapala and Ajijic, beautifully positioned on the shores of Lake Chapala (Mexico's largest lake).

About 50 minutes before you get to Puerto Vallarta, you'll pass by the turnoff for Sayulita, a little beach/surfing town--check it out.
