Question:

Advice to bring my 800m time down?

i'm a sophomore

and i made states for the second year in a row

w/ a 2:17 in the 800

but i think i should be able to run faster....

in intervals my 400m times are always sub-70

and thats usually with a 1min rest of standing

followed by 1min of jogging

also, my first lap of the 800 is always withing the range of 64-6

this year my times have been consistently 2:20 and below

(about 6-7 races i think....)

but i have not been able to break the 2:17 mark =[

i've been told that i should have the potential to break 2:15

(this was by an experienced coach)

in addition, a girl who i have runner better than,

if not equal too, all season

recently ran a 2:15 in the 800...

what may help me break 2:17 in the next race?!

it's friday, btw....

or, what will help be get close to 2:10 next year?

  1. jeez are you serious? you are already crazy fast girl! haha

  2. im in the same situation, just a few seconds slower though:) Try going out a little slower and then try to keep that pace of the last 400m as well. At this point there is not much you can do. Take a look at your 200m splits and see what is going on there. If you are getting faster as you go on, start off faster but if you are getting slower for the last 200m really focus on not dropping off. A lot of the time you'll slow down and not even realize it. My coach tells me to pick up the pace every 200m, and it works. You also have to not let your head get in the way the last 300m where it really starts to hurt. Its balls to the walls for the last 200/150 meters.

  3. just start out maybe faster than you think you should or normally do, then cruise from the 300 mark to the 500-550 area, and then sprint in.

  4. It sounds like you first lap is usually a bit faster than your second.

I have never seen you race, and I’m sure it is usually pretty packed. But I bet if you pace yourself the fist lap you could take a couple of seconds off.

You could give it a try at duals or smaller meets. Just look at your watch every 100m for the first lap to get your pacing down, and then you should be able to pull a more even split the second lap.

Good luck on your racing and training

  5. Your times are excellent. The only advice we can give you is to keep running. Get more races under your belt- Race experience will give you a better feel for your abilities and pushing your limits.

  6. i was a freshman this year and also want to bi=ring down my 800 time (not nearly as good as yours tho) and next year to help train for it i was going to run along side the 4x40om team while they were practicing and try to keep up all thru the 2nd leg. then rest the 3rd and when the 4goes try and keep up with it too just get an even beter run.

i hope that will help but it depends on if the 4x400 is as good as u.
