Aebischer, Bodie, Koci, Pesonen sign try-out contracts with Winnipeg Jets -NHL offseason Update
Winnipeg Jets looked into given four unrestricted free agents a chance to get back in the National Hockey League (NHL) with their newly relocated franchise on Tuesday, September 13, by inviting them to participate during the teams’ training camp, which is
set to begin later on this week.
Swiss goalie, David Aebischer, along with forwards, Troy Bodie, David Koci and Janne Pesonen, all signed try-out contracts with the Canadian franchise to give it a shot at making an NHL comeback after failing to have either signed or re-signed to other teams.
Aebischer, a veteran goaltender, last played in the North American major league during the 2007-2008 regular season, in only one matchup with Phoenix Coyotes. He was drafted by Colorado Avalanche during the 1997 NHL Entry Draft as the 161st overall
pick during round-six.
The Fribourg, Switzerland native, spent the last four seasons with HC Lugano back home and has also served as a backup to the legendary, Patrick Roy, during Colorado’s 2001 Stanley Cup stretch. If Winnipeg decides to select him, it is most likely that he
will be used for another backup position.
Troy Bodie, a 26-year-old, has played only 107 regular season matchups in the major league since his drafting in 2003 by Edmonton Oilers as the 278th overall during round-nine. The 6-foot-4 right winger certainly has the frame to play but lacked
last season as he managed to only score three points (1 goal, 2 assists) in 50 games played with Carolina Hurricanes.
David Koci hails from Prague, Czech Republic. He has played the past five seasons in the NHL but has yet to complete a full 82-game season with a team. The 30-year-old was selected 146th overall during round-five of the 2000 draft by Pittsburgh
Penguins. His game consists of intense physicality by registering huge penalty numbers, something which Winnipeg could use in power play situations.
Janne Pesonen is a Finnish player and has only played seven NHL games back in 2008 with Pittsburgh Penguins. Since then, he has worked on his playing skills in the American Hockey League (AHL) and Russian Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
