Aerobic Table Tennis – A new idea
There are few who believe that table tennis is bit of a dry sport like most of the other indoor games but Steve Rowe had just the answer to that when he came up with the idea of Aerobic Table Tennis.
Staying fit and healthy has always been the first objective for everyone and a lot of efforts are required to maintain a healthy and good looking body. Oscar Award winner Susan Sarandon showed up at the Spin New York event holding the racket [table tennis
paddle] as she admits that she loves playing table tennis.
Steve Rowe coaches in West of England as he comes up with the innovative idea of combining the sport with the latest physical exercises. He said “I was trying to think of ways to get more females involved in table tennis, so I looked at what females like
to do for exercise in general.” He researched on the matter and came to the conclusion that women are mostly into Yoga or Aerobics and the idea of Aerobic Table Tennis came into being. It has now been made part of the Wigan Sports Development Active Women
Project.
It has already been known that playing table tennis helps in burning a lot of fat and according to a famous website about.com, playing the sport helps burn a significant amount of calories. Playing table tennis just for the sake of knocking the ball or one
can say the beginner’s level burns about 200-250 calories per hour. If the sport is played a bit fast including the smashes and stepping around then the amount of calories burnt increases significantly. It is believed that one can burn about 400-600 calories
per hour by playing table tennis at an advanced level.
People have always been using the sport of table tennis to reduce calories for the purpose to remain fit but there was no typical term for the act. Aerobic Table Tennis seems just the right combination of them all as it combines the best of everything. It
helps one strengthen the heart and lungs, helps to burn calories, meet new people and learn the game. The main reason for Asian dominance in table tennis is because they have made the sport available for everyone. Table tennis games are observed being played
at many national parks across China. Housewives League is immensely popular in Japan since decades and is a main reason why the Asian female players are far better than European female players.
President of Malta Table Tennis Association, Joe Born Cardona loves the idea as he is ready to have the Aerobic Table Tennis session in the Mediterranean Island. He said, “I am very happy to have my good friend Joe on board with this wonderful project; Joe
has been very supportive of this innovative project.”
A qualified Yoga teacher, Michelle Almond has been included in the project and she explained that it is good fun to be part of such an innovative project. She mentioned that it is fun to join the whole class who shares the same idea as she does as it is
the first time that Yoga has been implemented officially in a sport and ITTF has done a brilliant job. She mentioned that no one denies the benefits of Yoga but putting it side-by-side with table tennis is a bold move and promises a lot of success.
Oscar award winner Susan Sarandon mentioned that she enjoys playing table tennis as does Soo Yeon Lee who represented Spin New York. Yeon’s picture of holding the table tennis racket with her marvellous figure gained a lot of popularity and it will be interesting
to see if glamour in the sport helps in attracting news fans.
