Question:

Affordable Hotels in Paris?

My partner and I are going to paris for 2 nights in a couple of months time. We are after a hotel close to the Eiffel Tour and other attractions for ease of getting round. The best value hotel I have found for 2 nights is just over $200 Euro's all up. Is this a reasonable rate, or are there better priced place's out there.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated. Cheers.

  1. The answer depends largely on what you consider an acceptable hotel.

I should point out from the outset that the notion of being "near the Eiffle tower" may betoken a misunderstanding of the layout of Paris.

Paris is a very compact city and just about every place in the city proper is only a short Metro ride from every other place. In that sense therefore, every place is close to the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel tower itself is in the west end of the city and one could argue that to be close to the Eiffel Tower tends to put you further away from the other attractions, most of which are more in the center.

In any case, back to the question of a hotel. My personal favorite, that I have stayed in dozens of times over the last 30+ years, is the Hotel St. Andre des Arts. its in the 6th arrondissment (St. Germain) just a few blocks to the boundry with the 5th (The Latin Quarter).

A double with ensuite shower and toilet is 89 euros a night. The price includes taxes and a simple breakfast of cafe au lait, bread, butter and jam.

You can book here and see some pictures: http://www.123france.co.uk/en/0/hotel-sa...

This is a very simple place. No elevators, no cable TV (no TV at all in fact), no mini-bars, no health club, spa or swimming pool.  Just a perfect location, clean, pleasant and with friendly staff.

Its almost always fully booked and many of its clients are, like me, seasoned Paris travellers who have stayed there many times before.

  2. The problem with accommodation in Paris - aside from the price! - is that the attractions in the city are extremely spread out. So if you stay near the Eifel Tower, you will be a good 20 minutes from Notre Dame, the Louvre etc etc. To be honest, there isn't an awful lot around the Eifel Tower. I would personally recommend a hotel in Saint Germain des Pres which is a lovely area full of little side streets and close to the Louvre and Notre Dame. Regarding prices, I don't know how luxorious you want. If you go on www.hostelworld.com you can find doubles for about 40€ per person, but the rooms will be quite basic (there are ratings from people who have stayed there so you can gauge what the rooms are actually like).
