Medium pacers Jacob Duffy and Matthew Quinn played starring roles in the New Zealand Under-19s recent ICC Under-19 World Cup 2012 match against the Afghanistan Under-19s, claiming 4 scalps each to propel their team to an 8-run win at the Kev Hackney Oval
in Buderim today on August 14.
The victory was a close one, with both sides more or less evenly matched. The Afghan U-19 attack also boasted two bowlers who managed 4 wicket hauls - Sayed Shirzad (10-1-34-4) and Yamin Ahmadzai (10-0-35-4) – and both of them managed to restrict the New
Zealand U-19s to 198, all out.
Ben Horne (9) and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MJ-Lumb-c1981 Carter (2) opened the innings for the Black Caps who won the toss and elected to bat first, but their partnership yielded only 13 runs. Horne fell prey to Sayed Shirzad in the 4th over, and Carter was dismissed, lbw, by Aftab
Alam in the 5th over. Sayed Shirzad stepped in once again to dismiss skipper Will Young (3), and the entire top order was taken care of.
Robert O'Donnell (69) and Henry Walsh (52) proved to be the saving grace of their team’s innings, establishing a 4th-wicket 108-run stand which got the team total up to 128 by the 37th over. Walsh was them dismissed by Yamin Ahmadzai
and his successor, wicketkeeper batsman Cam Fletcher (17) attempted to continue in a similar flow, setting up a 35-run stand with O'Donnell.
However, from there onwards, the Kiwis’ performances were mediocre at best, with Duffy (15) being the only batsman out of the lower order to register a double-digit score. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-Zealand-c754 were eventually bowled for 198 – an average total, which nevertheless
was defended successfully by their bowlers.
The Afghan team’s innings also featured mediocre performances, with the highlight being a few stable partnerships, but Duffy (10-0-40-4), and Player of the Match Quinn (9-2-26-4), assisted by Arnie Yugaraja (7-1-17-1), did an effective job of claiming wickets
and restricting the run flow to cut the Afghan team off at 190 by the end of 50 overs.
Duffy and Quinn teamed up to demolish the top 5 batsmen, without allowing them to make any significant contributions to their team’s total - http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shabir-Noori-c89259 (3) and Hashmatullah Shaidi (1) managed
paltry scores, and skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Javed-Ahmadi-c66518 (15) was the only one who managed to register a double-digit score.
A 62-run stand between http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Khan-c71319 (42). Yamin Ahmadzai also chipped in with a 17-run contribution,
in addition to setting up a 39-run partnership with Afsar Khan.
Their valiant efforts brought the team to within range of the target, but they were denied at the death by the Kiwi bowlers, who saw to it that the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Afghanistan-c745 U-19s finished at 190 by the end of 50 overs – 8 runs short of the target.
