Afleet alex?

Question

Does afleet alex belong in the same mention as some of the great race horses? I really liked this horse.

I loved alex also great story with the lemonade stand and all. I still cant believe that the Arkansas Derby is a grade 2 race with the likes of Smarty Jones, Lawyer Ron, Afleet Alex, And Curiln being recent winners.

I was very fond of Afleet Alex.  He was one of the first horses that I followed through his career.  I think he was certainly a great horse... he came within a length of winning the Triple Crown... He was third behind Giacomo and Closing Argument in the Derby, but was only a length from the win.  He did make the lead... if the finish had come a little sooner he would have won.  Then what he did in the Preakness was absolutely amazing.  Many horses would have given up and fallen down... Afleet Alex popped back up, regained his stride, then went on to win easily.  Then the Belmont wasn't too hard for him.  He didn't have a very long career and wasn't challenged much though, so it's hard to measure just how great he was... his injuries took away his 3 year old summer, then finally caused his retirement that fall... so we didn't really get to see what he could do... he never faced older horses so we don't know how he could have done against them.  Personally I do consider Afleet Alex to be among the greats.  I still have pictures of him that I cut out of the newspaper in 2005 :o)
