Afleeting Lady aiming to win the Molly Pitcher Stakes at Monmouth Park
After finishing as a runner-up to Royal Delta in the Grade 2 Fleur de Lis Handicap, Afleeting Lady is eyeing the prize in the Grade 2, $200,000 Molly Pitcher Stakes, which will be held at Monmouth Park on 29th July, 2012.
This race will give the five-year-old a chance to redeem herself after she lost by a margin of eight large lengths in the Fleur de Lis.
Running over a distance of 1 1/16-miles, it might be slightly easier for the mare, who has raced and won at this distance before.
With rider Victor Lebron on her back, the Kentucky bred runner defeated, It’s Tea Time, in 1 minute and 43.68 seconds in an Allowance Optional Claimer at Churchill Downs on 19th May, 2012.
Trained by Dale Romans, the runner will be ridden by jockey Rafael Bejarano and, will carry 116 pounds. Despite the fact that the filly is in good form, she will not have an easy race considering she will face off with some really tough runners.
Derwin's Star, the five-year-old daughter of Wildcat Heir, is at the top of her game as she secured a massive victory in the Grade 3 Bed o' Roses Handicap at Belmont Park and defeated, Catch a Thief at about seven furlongs.
The charge of Steve Klesaris has raced at a large distance only once, and this race will truly put her stamina and her ability to the test.
Teamed with rider Joseph Rocco, she will race as a high-weight of 123 pounds, and will break from post number 2.
The mare, who is owned by Marcia Cohen and partly owned by trainer, Steve Klesaris, has an overall record of 8-1-2 in 17 starts and has earnings worth $536,570.
In the Delaware Oaks in 2010, the Florida-bred runner covered this distance and landed a decent finish in third place, after winner Blind Luck, and runner-up, Havre De Grace – the eventual 2011 Horse of the Year.
The dirt track will be one thing that will assist her, since she has tackled this kind of course several times before.
