  1. Why ?

If a person attacks you, they have expressed the intent to really do harm to you.  As a soldier, I never hesitated to stop someone who attacked me, as long as they weren't moving, the job was done.  As a temporary resident of the USA, the same rules may apply, fewer people here are combat trained, so it is easier.  It took me about two seconds to take a knife from a moron and put him in a little pain.I let him run away and put his knife in a dumpster.

It takes a lot to kill a person, don't be so afraid, go out, get a burrito, enjoy.  If you are attacked, do what you have to do and walk away.  If you kill an armed attacker, don't worry, if you have issues, call the police, the evidence will speak for itself.

I grew up in Israel, I have lived in South Africa, both far more dangerous places than the USA.  Just go out and enjoy your life, don't be a jerk like me, sitting around, doing Taiji forms, stretching and indulging in a really excessively expensive home  theater ( $7000 for speakers alone).

Just go out and enjoy your life.  Many times in my life I have applied lethal force and have not one regret, I am alive, most of them are with Allah. Those people wanted to do me harm.  This is easy for me, I was training as a soldier since I was 14(pre-army), you're American, things here are very different.

Go out and enjoy life, don't be afraid of something that may never happen.

  2. This is a normal healthy response to fighting. Yes in a street fight with no rules and fighting all out someone could die. In war the object of fighting is to kill the opponent. This is and should be the hardest thing for a soldier or warrior to learn to do.

You do no why you hold back; it is your instinct for the preservation of life. Be thankful you have it or you would be psychotic.  To learn to go all out in a fight for sport competition is different. You need to train hard and realistic. As you build confidence and control it will be easier to give it your  "all". Don't worry about it it will come with training.

  3. What kind of fight are we talking about?

If it is any type of sanctioned fight between styles/clubs, or even a MMA fight in the octagon, you can be assured that the ref will stop the fight before your opponent gets too hurt.

Like all sports, there is that element of danger, I mean there have been several people killed playing golf! However the idea of martial arts fights is not to kill your opponent, rather, to score points by using your martial arts SKILL.

Speak to your trainer and ask them for advice. I'm sure you will be fine.

  4. From an evolutionary psychology stand point, that would make sense. Someone who avoids fighting is less likely to get killed so chances of surviving and producing similar offspring are higher.

  5. It's a very real possibility and your instinct tells you so.

That's why it's stupid to go into a fight "just because". You should only use violence when all else has failed and for a serious reason. (Preventing a serious crime from happening, restraining a dangerous person, etc...)

I'm not talking about sanctioned sporting events - those have rules and restrictions designed to ensure safety. I'm talking about street fights that start for no other reason than a dirty look. Your instinct rightfully tells you there is nothing to be gained and everything to be lost in them.
