Question:

Afraid to ask for help with ADHD

I've always been shy to tell my parents about diseases or concerns that I've had. I'm concerned that I might have ADHD. I can't focus while reading or studying, I feel nervous and gittery a lot, a teacher expressed concern about me having it, and my dad had ADHD. I'm afraid if I talk to my parents about it they won't take me seriously or if they do I won't have it and I'll be the boy who cried wolf. Help?

  1. I am so sorry to hear about what you are going through.  It is a real struggle to try to get through your day when a million things seem like are going on--then trying to focus on what you are doing in class.   What might be a good idea is to talk to your guidance counselor about the concerns you told us here, you can also talk to your teacher more about what to do next.

Your counselor/teacher may want to talk to your parents to share concerns and feelings (I am sure your dad could relate--and it is true ADHD runs in families!).  There are lots of ways to treat it.

It does not sound like you are the boy who cried wolf--it's a legitimate concern.  Everyone should be able to focus on what needs to be done--and not worry about countless other things going on that make it impossible.  Good luck to you.
