Question:

Afraid to loose my job need advice?

I took a job in town "B" which is 30 miles away from my town "A". I had to as there is no available work in my town since it is more geared as a retirement town than allowing work in for people around my age of 23 to find a good stable job.

In the interview I was asked the famous do you have reliable transportation question and in my state employers have to accept walking, public transportation, and being shuttled by a family member as a reliable form of transportation. All jobs in this uniform plant are production based which doesn't bother me except that the public bus comes only one time at 3:30pm and I have to walk from where I work to the bus terminal and it takes about 45 mins to do this.

Would it be wrong to tell my employer that I can't work the mandatory overtime because of my fixed transportation limitations? My fiancee take me to work since I don't have a car and I take the bus home starting when my fiancee goes to college.

I"m so stressed over this because my transportation problems are the reason why it's so hard for me to keep a job because I have to go at it alone as no one in my family will help me out and I don't accept rides from people I don't personally know.

Any advice would be awesome just keep in mind that my only option back from town "B" to town "A" is the public bus and I can't work past 2:30pm regardless if mandatory overtime is issued or not.

Thanks for your time it's greatly appreciated!

  1. You should tell your employer that!  You wrote the situation out so well, I am sure you can articulate your feelings face to face with alot of passion.    I was an HR Mgr in a Distribution Center at one point and we came across funky bus schedules all the time and tried to work around them.  I think they will be very understanding, as long as you are sincere!  I wish you well!!  I hope it works out..truly!

  2. Smart move: Not accepting rides from people you don't personally know. I wouldn't either.

You're definitely in a tight spot in the transportation department. Unfortunately you are facing a good possibility of getting fired if you always have to say "no" to mandatory overtime. ..and it isn't wrong to tell your employer that you're not able to work the mandatory overtime.

My suggestion to you is to seriously consider getting a good used small car like Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla as soon as you are able. If you go the used car route, stay away from CarMax because the prices are higher than a private owner or independent lot and they have a "no haggle" policy. The car would also put an end to your lack of transportation problem. I'm hesitant to recommend this because they're so dangerous (my grandfather almost died in a motorcycle accident)...a scooter or motorcycle if the car isn't an option financially.

  3. It doesn't sound like you have any options to me.
