Question:

African Clown Knives mating?

My husband and I have three adult African Clown Knives. We've noticed that the two biggest ones in the past month have been swirling around each other and sniffing each other's private areas. They keep doing this and I was wondering if they are mating. I'm unsure what they're doing but if anyone has an answer it would be greatly appreciated.

  1. Yes. You should put them into a breeding tank and keep the tank really calm or else they will abort the eggs. The mating pair will have purplish underparts. This is a sign. You should observe the breeding and mabye post info on a website that you can make yourself. Not a lot is known about their breeding. You should make the water warmer and feed them food like brine shrimp and bloodworms. This will stimulate the process. They are very delicate fish. You should probably remove the parents when the fry have hatched. The parents do canibilise. Good Luck.

P.S. If one of the knifes underparts do not chamge purple or green then they are not breeding. Observe.
